But I wanted to buck the tide, especially since the cost of commuting in L.A. — $1.75 for a single ride — is remarkably cheap compared with other major cities. It was an occasional challenge and sometimes — as when I just missed a bus and knew another one wouldn’t come for half an hour or 45 minutes — I would revert to Uber or Lyft. But mostly I did manage by bus, and I learned a few strategies along the way.
