A call to his former coach, Butch Harmon, helped the golfer go from ‘lost’ to a return to the world’s stage.
GUIDONIA MONTECELIO, Italy — Butch Harmon was happy when the phone finally rang last September. A longtime celebrated golf coach, Harmon had been watching from afar, as his former pupil Rickie Fowler slid from one of the most consistent players on the planet to 185th in the world rankings, nearly losing his Tour card.Harmon, 80, had never been one to offer unsolicited advice. So even though he remained close with Fowler, he quietly stewed and kept any swings tips to himself.
Fowler played in only one major in 2022 — tying for 23rd at the PGA Championship — and was struggling to finish in the top 50 as the season wound down. He had tinkered with things over the years, but by the end of the year, he seemed to realize wholesale change was in order. He eked into the FedEx Cup with the 125th and final spot, and before the playoffs began, he parted ways with Joe Skovron, his caddie of 13 years.
“Craig became my eyes for me,” Harmon said. “I’d tell him, ‘This is what I want you to watch for. This is what I need you to do.’” Bratton said he could sense something different after having dinner with Fowler in Florida in January.“He sounded confident again,” Bratton said. “He talked a little bit about where his game was and what he and Butch were doing. He just seemed super comfortable, confident and seemed like the kid that I’ve known since I first watched him back in 2004.”
