A Richmond Hill church faces scrutiny for its handling of a heritage cemetery, prompting investigations by the Bereavement Authority of Ontario and the City of Richmond Hill.
A Richmond Hill church is facing scrutiny again over the condition of a heritage cemetery it oversees. Both the Bereavement Authority of Ontario (BAO) and the City of Richmond Hill are investigating the Orthodox Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God in Richmond Hill . Broken and displaced tombstones are visible along the cemetery's edge, turf has been removed, and the parking lot has been excavated.
Local historian Joyce Horner, who played a key role in designating the cemetery as a heritage site, expressed concern about the potential disturbance of unmarked graves. Richmond Hill Councillor Karen Cilevitz, who chairs the heritage committee, was also alarmed by the construction work. This is the second time the church has been embroiled in controversy over the cemetery since acquiring the property in 2020. The BAO was previously involved in a case involving a family's burial plans that were delayed for months. The church has not publicly commented on the current investigations
