The ribbon cutting was held for the new Sylvia H. Rambo U.S. Courthouse in Harrisburg.
although planning to replace the old courthouse began in 2004. At the time, officials cited security and space as the primary reasons for the new building.
More than 19 years ago, the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee approved $26 million for buying land and drawing up plans for a new courthouse. The first seven years following the announcement in 2003 included numerous proposed sites. GSA picked two other locations before they finally selected the site at the corner of Reily and North Sixth streets following years of protests, criticism and U.S. House and Senate involvement. Then when the final location was selected, it took another six years to wait for the construction funding to be approved. And after that it has taken another six years for design and construction.
The new 243,000-square-foot, 10-story $190 million structure will include 43 interior secure parking spaces and 36 outdoor spaces, eight courtrooms and 11 judges’ chambers.
