How did throwing confectionary at the Mona Lisa raise awareness about climate change?

Protests, especially those which their supporters tell us are about “raising awareness,” are a rich mine for some of the most stupid and outré of manifestations. I have wondered for some time why stopping downtown traffic in some of the world’s busiest cities, by a handful of seriously tattooed folks sporting some of the most vivid hair colours outside the tropical forests, can — or ever could be supposed to — raise awareness, say, about climate change.

Related to this attack, naturally the hero was on the internet messaging what he was pleased to call his “purpose” in the circus attempt: “Think of the earth, people are destroying the earth.” He will perform an act of insult — perhaps he even thought he could damage the painting — against one of the great symbols of the highest culture of the West, because in that limited space, his mind, it will raise awareness of climate change. What next, travel south with a rubber sledge hammer and go to work on Michelangelo’s David?

Is there ever an apology or a statement of regret from Sierra or Greenpeace or the dread Bill Nye when one of their followers, their true believers, acts the vandal, dislocates the lives of ordinary people, or simply manifests behaviour that under any other banner would be seen either as criminal or deeply unsettling?
