Gervais not only seized the spotlight at the Golden Globes, he arrested it and kept it in custody for the entire event
The Golden Globes goes vegan, and the host of the suffocating shindig shows up with the only steak knife in the room. Everyone else is gnawing on spinach and he’s carving the turkeys.
Gervais not only seized the spotlight, he arrested it and kept it in custody for the entire event. Before Sunday, the always reliably slobbering entertainment press was cheering the Globes’ “commitment” to fighting global warming by going, as I noted previously, vegan — a gesture of the kind that Hollywood likes to describe as “sending a message.” No one received the message on Sunday night.

How else could so many who now, after the dam broke, say “they knew all along,” have kept their silence, unless they made the calculation better to stay quiet and ascend the ladder, than speak out and be pushed down and out? Everyone can be brave after the fact, righteous when there is no longer a price to pay.
