Traditions are passed down from generation to generation, things such as crafts and building skills that bond and connect families and communities.HeritageNL has been playing a crucial role in keeping traditions alive. Their Craft at Risk program not only documents the province's traditions but encourages their practice among newer generations.

In her research she was able to craft and create a list — released in 2021 — that encompassed crafts-at-risk within the province. The list was broken down into four categories: currently viable, endangered, critically endangered, and extinct. Through this program, the torch of tradition is passed from expert hands to eager minds, creating a bridge between the past and the future, she said. Recognizing the urgency to pass down these skills to newer generations, Barrett and her team took a proactive approach.

Some crafts or traditions are at greater risk of being lost than others. Crafts like birch broom making, regal fence making, and weaving are facing challenges due to changes in demand and practices. With a passionate commitment to safeguarding these traditions, Tarrant and the Anna Templeton Centre have embarked on a mission to impart knowledge and skills to new generations through hands-on workshops. — Cameron Kilfoy/The Telegram

"As we step into these workshops, we embark on a journey that transcends time, connecting us with the age-old techniques and artistry of our ancestors,” said Tarrant. “Each workshop is a tapestry woven with threads of knowledge and passion, where participants not only learn the craft but become part of a living legacy."
