Vaadeland led the band in friendly banter, corny jokes and well\u002Dpracticed patter that made the open\u002Dair show feel like a bluegrass cabaret.
Or maybe it’s better described as a parallel universe where you’d turn on the radio and expect to hear bluegrass instead of country, and kids dreaming of music stardom practice banjo for hours.
Starting off with a fast, enthusiastic performance of Vaadeland’s original song Father’s Son, the four musicians instantly proved their technical chops. Vaadeland also played homage to the bluegrass greats — and set up opportunities for his bandmates to take the lead and show off a bit, as well — with standards like Wildwood Flower and Pike County Breakdown.
