Led by conductor Andrew Davis, musicians ages 16 to 19 played with amazing precision and expressivity in Dallas' Meyerson Symphony Center.
isn’t the easiest piece for professional orchestras, which made Saturday’s NYO performance all the more amazing. In a piece supposedly evoking drug-induced hallucinations, Davis managed the tricky balance of grotesquerie and formal coherence. Dynamics were fastidiously scaled, from merest hushes to scorching climaxes.I was sorry Davis omitted the cornet solo Berlioz added to the “Ball” movement; it adds a bit of cheeky festivity, and heightens some harmonic suspensions.
The biggest audience I’ve seen in the Meyerson in a long time, and certainly the youngest, exploded in a pop concert ovation at the end of the Tchaikovsky. Hahn delivered the fireworks, with often amazing sonic projection. Davis was the most attentive of collaborators, exquisitely balancing, layering and nuancing dynamics. But let Tchaikovsky mark “expressively,” or “very expressively,” and Hahn would slow way down, and milk every cadence for everything it was worth, and then some.
