A mother whose teenage daughter died after consuming a date-rape drug and alcohol at a party is relieved that a retired judge has been appointed to oversee an investigation into misconduct complaints against two Victoria police officers involved in her daughter's case. Samantha Sims-Somerville, 18, died in April 2021 after being given GHB without her knowledge. Her mother, Tracy Sims, has been vocal in her fight for justice, successfully appealing for the coroner to reclassify her daughter's death as a homicide.

A mother who believes an investigation into her teenage daughter’s death was mishandled is relieved to learn that a retired judge has been appointed to oversee an investigation into her misconduct complaints against two Victoria police officers involved in the investigation.

Victoria police concluded their investigation into Sims-Somerville’s death without recommending charges. In April, Rajan determined it was necessary in the public interest to have the matter investigated by an external police force and appointed Vancouver police. Rajan said he considered it necessary in the public interest that a person other than an officer be appointed discipline authority based on a review of information received by his office.
