A retired D.C. police officer was found guilty of lying to authorities about leaking confidential information to the leader of the Proud Boys extremist group.

A retired police officer in Washington, D.C., was convicted of lying to authorities about leaking confidential information to the leader of the Proud Boys extremist group. U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson found former Metropolitan Police Department Lt. Shane Lamond guilty of obstructing justice and making false statements after a bench trial. Sentencing is scheduled for April 3.

Lamond was accused of leaking information to then-Proud Boys national chairman Enrique Tarrio, who was under investigation for burning a Black Lives Matter banner. Lamond denied providing Tarrio with sensitive police information. Tarrio, who testified as a witness for Lamond's defense, also claimed he did not confess to Lamond about burning the banner or receive any confidential information from him. However, the judge found neither man's testimony credible. Jackson stated that evidence suggested Lamond was not using Tarrio as a source after the banner burning, indicating that Tarrio was the one disseminating information. The judge described Tarrio as an 'awful witness,' characterizing him as 'flippant, grandiose and obnoxious' on the stand. Defense attorney Mark Schamel said it was too early to say if there will be an appeal
