The bill follows Pope Francis’s acknowledgement during his visit to Canada of the ongoing trauma and damage done by residential schools to Indigenous communities.Article content Although Canada’s resolution is non-legally binding, the motion helps Canadians reconceptualize the Indian Residential School system.Article content

The Convention defines genocide as acts committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group by five acts:c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part,e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.

The House of Commons resolution also indicates new perceptions of old colonial beliefs and emphasizes harms caused by residential schools.
