Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) finished second to Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) in internal GOP balloting this week. Rep. Austin Scott (R-Ga.) is a newcomer to the race.
A group of moderate Democrats on Friday called for a bipartisan effort to change legislative rules in the House as Republicans try to elect a new speaker. The Blue Dog Coalition, made up of centrist Democrats, endorsed a letter from Democratic members of the Problem Solvers Caucus Executive Council that called for expanding the authority of the speaker pro tempore to avoid a government shutdown next month.
The Problems Solvers Caucus is made up of both Democrats and Republicans. In a statement, the coalition said it supported allowing the temporary speaker to bring proposed legislation to the floor on matters related to funding the government and funding Ukraine and Israel. “This is a time for courage and creativity by members of both parties, and a time for civic-minded Americans to put aside their cynicism and pessimism about what is possible in the People’s House,” the statement read.
