Glenn Youngkin was inaugurated as Virginia’s governor and promised to change policies on COVID-19, education, taxes, the economy and criminal justice.
His opening words were interrupted on cue by a roaring flyover, after which he concluded,"we celebrate the sound of freedom."A traditional inaugural parade was set to kick off after the ceremony and inaugural speech. Participants will include members of the Virginia National Guard, Virginia university and high school students, NASA representatives and law enforcement officers, according to Youngkin's transition team.
Youngkin says his administration wants to create 400,000 jobs and 10,000 new startups during his tenure. "The way that Virginia works is that the governor cannot ban mask mandates. Schools make those decisions,” he said. “We will in fact, then, also make sure that schools allow parents to exercise their rights for what’s best for their children, to opt-out of those mandates."
Virginia political analyst Bob Holsworth said he expected “an absolute sea change” on criminal justice in Virginia, comparing Northam and former Attorney General Mark Herring’s objectives to those of Youngkin and Miyares. "Our politics have become too toxic. Soundbites have replaced solutions, taking precedence over good faith problem-solving," Youngkin said.
