Nolan Arenado is set to become a free agent next offseason, but the Colorado Rockies are about to stop that from happening.
ESPN's Jeff Passan reports that that the team is finalizing a deal with their 27-year-old superstar third baseman that will carry the largest-ever annual salary in Major League Baseball history for a position player with an eight-year deal worth $260 million. BREAKING: Third baseman Nolan Arenado and the Colorado Rockies are finalizing an eight-year, contract extension worth more than $255M, league sources tell ESPN. Deal includes an opt-out after three years, would give Arenado the largest per-year salary of any position player.The deal will tear up the final year of his contract - for 2019 - and replace it with the eight-year extension.
The $32.5 million per season would eclipse the record held by Miguel Cabrera's current deal that pays the veteran $31 million deal for a position player and sit behind only Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Zack Greinke's $34.41 million salary.In 156 games last year, the Newport Beach, CA native batted .297 with a National League-leading 38 home runs, 110 runs batted in and an OPS of .935.
With Arenado, the Rockies have qualified for the postseason in consecutive years for the first time in the club's 26-year history.
