MLB owners will vote on a plan that will require teams to share at least 48 per cent of their revenue with the MLBPA, per BNightengale.
MLB owners are slated to vote on a plan Monday that will require teams to share at least 48 per cent of their revenue with the MLBPA in order to offset losses related to an abbreviated 2020 season played without fans due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according toNightengale reports that the proposal — which would see the MLB share revenue with players for the first time in history, unlike its counterparts in the NFL, NBA and NHL — is essential to a 2020 campaign beginning in July.
The plan is also expected to be sent to the players union Monday evening. The MLBPA has reportedly rejected the idea of further pay cuts given players will lose about half their annual salary with a truncated 82-game slate.Training camps would begin in June with opening day expected to take place July 1-4. Clubs could host a second spring training at their home facilities or at complexes in Arizona and Florida.
The hope is all teams can host games at their home ballparks, but if they are unable to do so at the beginning of the season, they could share another major-league facility with another team or play out of their spring complex. The MLB will also reportedly maintain its traditional two-league- and six-division structure, but they will vote on a universal designated hitter position.
Owners have also reportedly agreed to open up the playoffs to 14 teams from 10 by adding another wild-card round.
