According to NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski, the Cleveland Cavaliers have received permission to interview Golden State assistant Kenny Atkinson and New Orleans assistant James Borrego.
CLEVELAND, Ohio - According to the report from ESPN , the Cavs are planning to speak with more assistant coaches, but the top candidates to replace J.B. Bickerstaff are Atkinson and Borrego because of their head-coaching backgrounds.
Borrego is also a candidate for the Lakers head coaching vacancy, ESPN reporting that Borrego had a second interview with the team’s front office in Los Angeles on Wednesday. Borrego served as the head coach of the Charlotte Hornets from 2018-2022 where he led the Hornets to back-to-back Eastern Conference Play-In Tournament appearances.
Atkinson was the head coach of the Brooklyn Nets from 2016-2020 and finished with a 118-190 overall record with the Nets. During his time in Brooklyn he worked with current Cavs Jarrett Allen and Caris LeVert.J.B. Bickerstaff after losing to Boston in the Eastern Conference semifinals, finishing with a 48-34 regular season record and back-to-back seasons with playoff appearances.
