Speaker Kevin McCarthy is facing an extraordinary referendum on his leadership of the House of Representatives.
WASHINGTON — Speaker Kevin McCarthy is facing an extraordinary referendum on his leadership of the House after a conservative member of his own Republican majority, a longtime critic, moved to launch a vote to oust him from the helm.Late Monday, Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., rose in the chamber as the House was almost done for the day to file the motion — a resolution that would set a snap vote in coming days that even Gaetz acknowledged may not have enough support to remove the speaker from the job.
“It’s a really bad idea,” said Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., one of the more conservative lawmakers in the House. Conservative critics have been hounding McCarthy from the start, denying him votes and thwarting his plans. But McCarthy has leaned into the fight and suggested it’s an opportunity to set aside his critics once and for all.
A motion to vacate is a rare and strong procedural tool that has only been used twice in the past century against Republican speakers. But in recent years, conservatives have wielded the motion as a weapon against their leaders.

Govt. shutdown: Rep. Gaetz 'throwing down the gauntlet' against McCarthyThough Congress managed to momentarily circumnavigate a government shutdown, the pressure is on to come to an official consensus on federal spending by the new November 17 deadline. And Republican lawmakers are not happy with how House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Ca.) handled this crisis. Semafor Founding Editor-at-Large Steve Clemons details how Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fl.) is leading the charge against McCarthy, motioning the House Speaker to vacate his position, and how House Democrats are reacting to this maneuver. 'The parties in power have a hard time when they have thin margins,' Clemons tells Yahoo Finance. 'What you're seeing now are Matt Gaetz, Marjorie Taylor Greene, and the others that Speaker McCarthy has put on the Rules committee, given them enormous power... and they are now using that same kind of leverage, but sometimes... it's for their own personal issues and sometimes it's for genuine concerns about fiscal responsibility.'
