2025's cap to be lower than this year's allowable increase of 3.5%
B.C. announced next year's rental increase cap on Monday , saying landlords will be allowed to raise rates by a maximum of three per cent in 2025. Housing Minister Ravi Kahlon said in a statement that the cap both"protects renters against unfair rent hikes" and allows"landlords to meet rising costs so that rental homes can stay in B.C.'s housing market."
A May 2024 decision from the branch ruled in favour of two landlords who requested to raise their tenants' rents by 27 per cent – 23.5 per cent beyond the 3.5 per cent cap – to cover the costs of a ballooning mortgage. In response, the Ministry of Housing said the ruling was the first it was aware of since it began collecting data in 2021.
