‘We took our time with the renovation, did it slowly, and got things right,’ says Norm Chang of his Toronto home
When Norm Chang first bought his home in Toronto’s tony Summerhill neighbourhood, he didn’t plan to live in it. At 30 years old and unmarried, the 3,500-square-foot, $1.9-million house felt too large for one person. Instead, Mr. Chang, who works in finance, decided to rent it out and live in a converted downtown loft.
But he didn’t rush. He wanted to renovate the house to suit both his family’s needs and their style. “We were lucky to have the loft,” he says. “It gave us a place to live while we took our time with the renovation, did it slowly, and got things right.
The redesigned floor plan is now completely open. On the ground floor, the dining room, kitchen and living area flow seamlessly into one another. This flexible, free-flowing layout is perfect for a family that loves to entertain, accommodating gatherings where kids, parents, grandparents and other relatives can mingle. A highlight is the family room, featuring a double-height ceiling, large windows and a bright, airy feel even on the darkest winter days.
Aesthetically, Ms. Vokac Taylor sought to restore some of the home’s original grandeur while incorporating contemporary details and materials. “Norm and Rana appreciate beautiful finishes and warm colours,” she says. “But I didn’t want to create a homage to the past or make it a pastiche.”
