The horrific attack confirmed the rising wave of antisemitism and white supremacy in the United States that accelerated during Donald Trump’s presidency and continues to this day. We’re living in difficult, dark times, where it’s easy to lose track of all the painful events competing for our attention. But we owe it to the victims of the Tree of Life shooting — and to victims of antisemitism around the country and the world — not to forget. Instead, we must learn from these tragedies.
Growing up, I naively viewed antisemitism as a footnote in history meant to be studied, not a present-day threat to be confronted. I realize now how insulated I was from reality. It feels like nearly every week there’s another story of an antisemitic street assault or an act of vandalism at a synagogue., Texas, parking spots were spray-painted with swastikas, the n-word, and other bigoted language.
