DENVER — It’s not the most impactful story Denver7 covered in its 70 year history, but the infamous balloon boy incident in 2009 certainly captivated Colorado and the millions of people who were glued to their TV sets watching the drama unfold that day back then.
It was October 15, 2009 and the world watched as a homemade balloon soared across the Colorado skies, tracked by Denver7’s news helicopter. Inside was a 6-year-old boy, possibly injured and most likely terrified. At least that’s what the world thought at the time. But behind the dramatic day was a detailed plan. Sanchez said the parents were trying to get a television show started, but nobody was expressing any interest. So, they hatched a plan: Richard would build a metallic craft-shaped balloon with his family’s help and they would take videos of the process.
But instead, Falcon hid in the attic of the home’s garage. And then he fell asleep. Various emergency personnel arrived at the home and followed the balloon for 50 miles as it whizzed through the air. The flight was broadcast across the country. It eventually landed in a farm field. When authorities reached it, there was no boy inside. Falcon was found soon after at the Heenes' home.
Suspicions arose when Falcon looked up to his dad during a CNN interview and said, “You had said that we did this for the show." Authorities, both locally and on the federal level, spent at least $62,000 pursuing the balloon and searching for the boy.
