New Year’s resolutions sometimes mean spiritual goals, improvements for the faithful
The clean slate heralded by a brand-new calendar year is so seductive that nearly half of Americans vow to improve their health beginning Jan. 1.
The Babylonian New Year was adopted by the ancient Romans, as was the tradition of resolutions. The timing, however, eventually shifted with the Julian calendar in 46 B.C., which declared Jan. 1 as the start of the new year. History.com notes that for early Christians, this first day of the new year became the traditional occasion for thinking about one’s past mistakes and resolving to do and be better in the future.
He encourages believers to acknowledge God as their companion as they journey through 2023, allowing God to be present in all aspects of their lives. Fr.
