'Every time, even on the easy days, I’m so happy to be out there running again and feeling good.' G_Rupp

, a congenital defect involving an enlargement on the back of the heel bone. The procedure involved temporarily detaching the Achilles tendon, smoothing the bone, and then re-attaching it.

It hurt a lot, I’ll say that. I couldn’t put it at a 10, because for me, a 10 is where you’re not able to run or train or do anything. But it was definitely bugging me.The next day, it was swollen and stiff. I was on a plane and that’s when I talked to Amol [Saxena, D.P.M., who performed the surgery]. He was outlining what we could do going forward, and one of the main options he said was surgery. And I was like—‘Well, wait a second.

I mean, I was able to run a marathon and run relatively well. If the worst thing that I have to go through is to miss one spring marathon, but I’m going to be fine for the fall, I’m going to be fine for the Olympics in 2020—thank God, that’s a pretty good situation to be in.from Nike Oregon Project in April, we see a little bit of the day-to-day grind—foot and ankle exercises with the resistance band, the underwater treadmill, massages to break up scar tissue.

In the middle of all this, you had another son in February, correct? I’ll bet you, and your wife Keara, appreciated that timing. I almost had to relearn how to run my left side, to trust my body. It was just really stiff, and there was still swelling. It was weird—I would think I was running normal, but Alberto would be watching me, or my wife, or a PT. And they’d see I was still favoring it, and I’d look at myself on videos and realize, yeah, it doesn’t look all that great.

Ultimately, my goal is to run as well as I can here in Chicago, and I need to be 100 percent healthy and in great shape for that, so that is the big driver of everything I’m doing right now. But being this long away from racing, I definitely want to do some road races this summer. I usually do a half marathon anywhere from four to six weeks or eight to 10 weeks out, and I’m sure we’ll stick with that. You never know.

So, you’ll have that and then the Olympic Trials in Atlanta and then presumably the Olympics. So that’s three marathons in 10 months. How will you approach that?
