ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Newfoundland and Labrador Auditor General Denise Hanrahan is still in the early days of her investigation into the province’s travel nurse contracts, but already she has found what she calls “significant issues.”

“If you get into the details of these expenses … we're seeing things that would appear to not be reasonable in a public sector light to reimburse someone for. So, certainly those details will come out in our report. Our intention is to have a report by the end of the year.” “We expect that no recommendation would take seven years to implement or otherwise resolve. This report demonstrates that our recommendations remain relevant and that the issues identified in past performance audits should have been rectified by now,” it said.

“Outstanding recommendations in these reports relate to evaluation, oversight, governance, compliance with policy, business continuity, conflict of interest, internal controls and fraud management. As I'm sure we all can agree, those are very important issues. One specific example of a recommendation not yet fully implemented comes from the 2019 student transportation audit, which recommended to improve the monitoring and enforcement of school bus driver training.Hanrahan said that how the government responds to these recommendations will show the public how committed it is to positive change and improvement.

Of the recommendations not yet implemented, Hanrahan said it’s the ones related to the health sector that concern her the most.
