The family of Regis Korchinski-Paquet — a 29-year-old Afro-Indigenous woman who died in May 2020 after falling from a High Park highrise — has filed a $10-million civil lawsuit.
Five Toronto police officers, the city of Toronto, the Toronto Community Housing Corporation, Ontario’s attorney general and Joseph Martino of Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit , are all named in the statement of claim, which was filed on June 27.
The suit alleges the family was provided with “misleading information” about their daughters’ death and suffered “severe emotional distress,” and that officers provided false and/or misleading information to the SIU and the Office of the Independent Review Director . It also claims that Korchinski-Paquet and her mother had repeatedly asked the TCHC to put safety fencing around their balcony, but were ignored.
