The actress hikes in Shirley Chisholm State Park and explains why she felt moved to spend fifteen years on her Netflix bio-pic, “Shirley,” Tyler Foggatt writes.
King has won an Oscar, a Golden Globe, and four Emmys. She has starred in a wide range of movies and TV shows, including “If Beale Street Could Talk,” “The Leftovers,” “Seven Seconds,” and “American Crime.” She also voiced two characters on “The Boondocks,” an animated series that often satirized Black political figures, including M.L.K. himself.
Through the years, King watched other politicians characterize themselves as trailblazers, arguably at the expense of Chisholm’s legacy. In 1984, Jesse Jackson became the second African American to run for the Democratic nomination. “Reina and I were, like, ‘Oh, I guess he’s not gonna say anything about Shirley. O.K.,’ ” King said. Same goes for Hillary Clinton. When Clinton ran for the Democratic nomination in 2016, King was working on the script for the bio-pic.
