It’s here that it should be pointed out again interaction between Charlie and de Villiers is not somehow created on a green screen with motion capture technology. This is a real kid interacting with an actual apex predator. “It was too dangerous for us,” said de Maistre, adding that he never worried for de Villiers safety. “The protection was love.
Of course there have been detractors of this film — any film with real animals faces intense scrutiny — but de Maistre stands by the ethics behind the project. De Maistre agrees he could have made a documentary about this horrible practice but he wanted people to come to the issue through the eyes of a kid and a lion.
“Every screening we have we have a workshop attached to it or some activity like a discussion with the director in attendance,” said Felton.
