Annual youth film festival includes award-wining short films and a behind the scenes career expo for youth who want to pursue career sin film.

Where:Vancity Theatre, Roundhouse Community Centre This year’s Reel 2 Real Film Festival for Youth is opening with the timeless story of a relationship between a kid and an animal.

Suddenly Mia forgets to be sullen when a newborn white, male lion cub named Charlie is brought into the family’s house and boldly pencilled into her father’s business plan.Charlie as a cub is sooooo cute as he clumsily leaps onto Mia’s bed, knocks stuff off her desk and playfully swats at her with his saucer-sized paws. But all that kitten behaviour doesn’t seem so funny when Charlie gets older and weighs in at 150 kilograms or more.

It’s here that it should be pointed out again interaction between Charlie and de Villiers is not somehow created on a green screen with motion capture technology. This is a real kid interacting with an actual apex predator. “It was too dangerous for us,” said de Maistre, adding that he never worried for de Villiers safety. “The protection was love.

Of course there have been detractors of this film — any film with real animals faces intense scrutiny — but de Maistre stands by the ethics behind the project. De Maistre agrees he could have made a documentary about this horrible practice but he wanted people to come to the issue through the eyes of a kid and a lion.

“Every screening we have we have a workshop attached to it or some activity like a discussion with the director in attendance,” said Felton.
