"In my whole career, I've never diagnosed someone your age with breast cancer," Sylliboy says her doctor admitted when she delivered the life-changing bad news.The journey that followed was fraught with physical and emotional challenges, but it also led to profound personal growth and the rediscovery of confidence. Sylliboy's battle was intense, requiring a year-long series of treatments of chemotherapy, radiation and finally, a double mastectomy.
The transition was difficult, but Sylliboy found solace and expression in art, particularly face painting, which allowed her to communicate her feelings in ways words could not. Art became a sanctuary for Sylliboy, a place where she could confront her emotions head-on. She shared a portrait of her painted face on social media, capturing the raw essence of her experience.
Recovery was not just a physical process but a mental and emotional one. Sylliboy embarked on a self-care journey, started a vegan and gluten-free diet, adopted a new style of dressing paired with expressive face paint and returned to the teaching world. In this phase, she truly began to regain her confidence, not by hiding her changes but by wearing them as badges of resilience, and most of all, Sylliboy says, accepting herself as she is.
