Serenity was founded in 1999 and partners with 12 districts throughout North Texas to provide students coming out of substance abuse treatment programs with a place to continue recovery alongside other students who have similar struggles and goals at no cost to the student — however, if a student’s district is not partnered with Serenity, they can still attend, but that cost burden then falls to the parent or legal guardian.

Serenity High is the only public recovery high school in North Texas helping 9-12 graders recover from addiction and substance abuse.Brady, who graduated from Serenity this past May, said it was the support from the teachers that got him through.

“Knowing that those extra people are there in your circle to talk to, it was really nice,” she said. “I really liked the one-on-one teaching and little meetings we would do as a group.”Getting outside support is also an important part of the recovery plan at Serenity, and students are encouraged to attend therapy outside of school. During Brady’s first day at the school, he didn’t say a word. But, by the end of the week, he was already opening up and starting to form relationships that he still relies on today. Commander said when she graduated at 18, she felt like falling back into a bad place, but her relationships at Serenity and GraceToChange helped her stay on the right path.

Further, Long said the stigma that comes with a substance abuse disorder may hold parents back from enrolling their kid in a recovery high school, and, now, with more remote school options, parents may opt for online learning to avoid such stigmas.
