Recorded phone calls between Columbus City School board members are revealing new details on a document scandal that rocked the district.
ABC 6 News listened to the conversations Tuesday morning, and records show the conversation was between Simmons and board members Jennifer Adair and Tina Pierce .
It appears neither one knew that Simmons was recording them, and Pierce even says that she "does not consent to being recorded."Adair apologized to Simmons for sharing the document with board member Sarah Ingles. Adair says that he did that because the memo had been shared with the superintendent, and she never thought it would become public.
"I don’t even know. I mean, it’s just, I told Sarah, I was like you just created a **** storm. I mean, the way our community views ask anyways, this just again makes it look like we don’t know what we’re doing. The conversation between Simmons and Tina Pierce largely focused on how to handle the expected fallout after the document was released.
Pierce encourages Simmons not the say anything until they know what the teacher's union does. There is also talk of the document being a collaborative effort."Right now, the story is Brandon wrote a document. We need to go after Brandon. Nobody knows the full players that were in the room or who shared the document.", but the Board has denied that -- it has released an internal legal investigation that allegedly shows only Simmons was responsible.
ABC 6 News received these recorded calls because Simmons gave them to the State Auditor as part of his complaint that the Board has misused public funds., and they restricted his access to district buildings. Board President Christina Vera says that decision was not retaliation against Simmons.
