Last year saw a record-breaking number of power outages for BC Hydro customers, primarily caused by severe storms in the fall and winter. The storms, compounded by a recent drought, left trees susceptible to damage and falling onto power lines, impacting nearly 1.4 million customers. Despite the increasing frequency of outages, BC Hydro highlights its improved response times, aiming to restore power to 90% of customers within 24 hours.
Nearly 1.4 million BC Hydro customers experienced power outages last year due to weather-related events, marking a record high for the utility. BC Hydro attributes this unprecedented number of outages primarily to three severe storms that impacted the South Coast and Vancouver Island in November and December. According to a survey commissioned by BC Hydro, almost three-quarters of British Columbians endured at least one weather-related power outage throughout the year.
The Crown corporation emphasizes that the fall and winter storms ranked among the five most significant weather events in the past decade. They were exacerbated by a recent drought, which left trees vulnerable to damage and prone to falling onto power lines and other critical infrastructure.Susie Rieder, a spokesperson for BC Hydro, states that the utility has been actively preparing for the consequences of climate change on its power system. This includes tripling the budget allocated for vegetation management around transmission lines. Despite the increasing frequency of outages, BC Hydro asserts that its response times are improving, consistently restoring power to 90% of customers within 24 hours.
