Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro says the outages were the result of two trips in the system — safety features built in to protect equipment — but what caused the trips is under investigation. “Hydro manages the system with reserve electricity supply available, which allows us to restore customers quickly during these events.”

The second trip occurred while bringing the Maritime Link back into service. The Maritime Link tripped, resulting in Stephenville customers again losing power.
