A British Columbia realtor has been charged with interfering with wildfire-fighting efforts after launching a drone to photograph a burned-out hotel weeks after a devastating wildfire.

A Realtor in British Columbia has been charged with interfering with wildfire-fighting operations in August 2023. Court records indicate that Leippi, the realtor, was on his boat on August 27th, launched his drone to capture a photo of a hotel destroyed by the McDougall Creek wildfire. It was approximately ten days after the wildfire caused widespread devastation in the area. Leippi claims he was unaware that fire suppression activities were still ongoing.

He asserts that he immediately complied with police instructions to land his drone. He maintains that he did not intend to disrupt firefighting efforts and cooperated fully with authorities by providing a statement. Leippi expressed remorse for his actions, stating that he recognized the mistake of launching a drone, even weeks after the fires. He acknowledged the ongoing efforts to extinguish remaining hotspots and stated he was not attempting to film active wildfires or deliberately interfere with wildfire operations. He hopes to resolve the charge but has yet to consult with Crown prosecutors or retain legal representation. Leippi is scheduled to appear in B.C. provincial court in Kelowna on February 11th, 2024
