Kenneth Jones Jr., the pastor of the church, said the event was intended to be a meeting of area pastors but morphed into a meeting for the community to grieve and discuss the next steps for the neighborhood.“We still have a great harvest of individuals who still need the Lord,” Jones said. “What this horrific tragedy has shared with me is that we still have work to do for the body of Christ, and it’s not necessarily work within these sacred walls, but in the streets.
Timmons said the neighborhood’s parade and celebrations before Independence Day had been part of the history of the community since the 1940s. Some even referred to July 3 as “Como Day,” Timmons recalled.“The third of July has always been the main celebration as long as I can remember,” he said. Although the neighborhood has and continues to experience socioeconomic hardships, its residents find a way to heal and build back, Timmons said.Members of Legacy Lake Como, the nonprofit group that organized ComoFest, also attended Wednesday’s meeting.they appreciate the organization’s work with youth in the community as well as its efforts around the festival.
Tarrant County Commissioner Roy Charles Brooks said the problem of gun violence cannot be solved by law enforcement or government-led efforts alone. He spoke to attendees about the, an education and outreach program aimed at addressing and preventing youth gun violence.
