A Sault Ste. Marie resident raises concerns about the safety of essential workers and students during a recent snowstorm, urging for a city-wide stay-at-home order and school closures.
SooToday received a Letter to the Editor from reader Glenna Davey regarding the recent severe weather. Davey expressed concern for staff who had to report to work despite hazardous conditions. She criticized the lack of a city-wide order for employees to stay home, noting the extremely poor visibility due to heavy snow.
She questioned the school board's decision not to close all schools, emphasizing the safety risks for students traveling from areas like Airport Road, where open fields presented a significant danger. Davey highlighted the treacherous road conditions, particularly on routes like the Westbound going to and from Gros Cap and the airport, as well as on the highways. She pointed to the absence of bus drivers on the roads as a clear indication that people should have stayed home. She advocated for prioritizing the safety of both students and staff, citing the closure of Sault College as a positive example. Davey questioned the rationale behind expecting staff to work in such dangerous conditions, arguing that students should not be held to a higher standard of resilience. She suggested that grader operators could use the time to clear empty lots, emphasizing that lives are more important than work obligations
