House and Senate Democrats have unveiled the Justice in Policing Act, meant to overhaul policing by banning the usage of choke-holds and no-knock warrants, as well as create a national registry to track police misconduct. Read the bill here 👇
. She said the biggest change the legislation would bring is a shift in police culture.
"Raising the standards, having national certification and raising the level of policing in the United States so that it is like many other professions," Bass described."The profession that has the power to kill should be a profession that has national standards, is transparent and is accountable to the public."
The House of Representatives is expected to spend much of June working on the measure, and Bass said she's hopeful for bipartisan support. It's unclear how the GOP-controlled Senate will respond to it. "I think that my colleagues on either side of the aisle believe that in the United States of America in 2020, there is no excuse for a police department to commit open, public acts of abusing the human rights of Americans," she said.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said Congress is standing with those"fighting for justice and taking action."
