RCMP warns of rise in sexual extortion scams in Comox Valley

The Comox Valley RCMP is warning residents of an increase in sexual extortion, or “sextortion,” scams in the community, which are particularly targeting men and young boys.

Mounties say sextortion scams generally involve a victim being approached by fake accounts on social media that are posing as “attractive women.”

The scammers attempt to have the victims send nude photos or perform sexual acts on camera. Once the images or videos are sent, the scammers threaten to release the footage to extort money.
