Brian Sauvé, head of the National Police Federation, demanded “clarity and certainty” for the nearly 20,000 Mounties it represents.
OTTAWA—The Mounties’ union is calling on the Trudeau government to make clear its intentions for the future of the RCMP in the wake of a Star report that revealed new support in Ottawa for handing over local and regional policing duties to provinces.
There have long been calls inside and outside the force for the RCMP to get out of what’s called “contract policing” — that is, providing local and regional policing coverage under contract to provinces — and for the force to become mainly a federal police agency that operates more like the FBI, focused on national security, terrorism, cybercrime and other complex crime that crosses borders.
Sauvé slammed the “ongoing speculation” and what he called “vague language from government representatives,” saying it is “demoralizing” Mounties “whose careers, lives and even families have been built around service to their communities, large and small. Right now, the RCMP is a $4.2-billion national police force with multiple responsibilities for federal, provincial, local and regional policing across eight provinces, three territories, 150 municipalities and 600 Indigenous communities. In addition, Mounties also provide specialized police services such as the Canadian Police Information Centre database, firearms classification, and protection for the governor general, prime minister and visiting international dignitaries.
