A year and nine months after a stabbing rampage on James Smith Cree Nation and in nearby Weldon that leftand a province in shock, an RCMP review has found there was no glaring flaw or “missing link” in the police response that could have prevented the tragedy or saved lives that day.
Rhonda Blackmore, Commanding Officer of the Saskatchewan RCMP, speaks on February 29, 2024 during a press conference after the inquest into the apprehension and death of Myles Sanderson, who killed 11 people and injured 17 others on James Smith Cree Nation and the nearby community of Weldon back in September 2022.
In the process of putting together the report, RCMP says it spoke to multiple JSCN community members who “held the belief that, if there had been a member posted directly to the JSCN at the time of the offence, that there would have been fewer victims.” The RCMP says it hopes this review will “provoke both regional and national level discussions,” because “the RCMP are becoming increasingly challenged to manage complex critical events .”
