We chat with QuantumLeap star Raymond Lee, who reflects on the original show's legacy, his chemistry with costar Caitlin Bassett, and what's in store for season 1 of the new NBC series:
NBC is bringing back Quantum Leap after nearly 30 years, with the premiere airing tonight. While Scott Bakula's beloved Dr. Sam Beckett is not involved in the project as of yet, his successor Dr. Ben Song honors his advancements as he furthers the work. Martin Gero, who is responsible for Blindspot and has worked on Kung Fu, serves as showrunner and helps to bridge the decades-long gap between the shows.
There was a throughline of having this strange relationship with his father, which is something that I can relate to, and I remembered that just striking a chord in me. That was also my first introduction to sci-fi, so this show holds a very special place in my heart. When I found out it was coming back, it was very exciting news.
As for your character, Dr. Ben Song, we leap right in with very little buildup, and then we are quantifying away. What's it like to be the audience's way in, because he's learning with us? Raymond Lee: It's super fun. She is so talented, insanely good, and ridiculously smart. She, in a lot of ways, is exactly Addison—and it's easy to fall in love with her because she is all that. And when she first presents herself to Ben, it's like, "You're gonna be the person with me? I'm a lucky, lucky person that have you by my side." And then we used to have a thing? "Okay, this is all very intense and strange, but I'm glad it was you.
Before the leap, we were all working at Quantum Leap headquarters together all trying to figure out the next great algorithm. We work together all the time, so it was important for us to create that dynamic, so we can break it and understand what was there. Spiritually, I am still there with them, so it was important for that to exist. But I miss them.
