The Glasgow summit makes clear the new reality that China has learned it can conduct itself with impunity
Xi has launched aggressive actions in relation to Taiwan. American President Joe Biden blusters a bit, but given that he remains proud of his shambolic humiliation in Afghanistan, there is nothing to fear from that quarter.
Not that Canada matters much to China’s foreign policy, but I am sure it pleased Xi to know that while the Two Michaels were languishing in prison, Canada’s ambassador in Beijing was lobbying Canadian businessmen — not to use their influence, modest as it might be, to seek their freedom, but rather to keep up their inward investment in China.Article content
Chinese President Xi Jinping, seen in a photo from Oct. 9, 2021, is not expected to attend the upcoming COP26 climate summit in Glasgow, Scotland.Meanwhile, political repression in Hong Kong has reached new levels, with the new security law suspending basic liberties and the chief independent newspaper owner being clapped into arbitrary detention. Nevertheless, the assembled ranks of diplomats veritably beg Xi to bestow his presence upon them in Scotland.
Glasgow without concrete Chinese commitments will be about expressing concern, not achieving results. Not that it will be a waste of time. If nothing else, Biden will be able to personally lobby the OPEC countries to increase their oil production to meet his own domestic demand.
