In one of the more delightful and emotional games of the season, Kyrie Irving drilled a three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Brooklyn Nets a dramatic 119-116 win over the Raptors.
They shot three-pointers better than they have in about a week, defended more aggressively than they have in four or five games, took care of the ball and created turnovers. And the Raptors got nothing for it.
Fred VanVleet gave the Raptors another tremendous effort — 39 points, including four of Toronto’s nine three-pointers — and coach Nick Nurse dusted off Malachi Flynn for some offensive punch and Flynn came through and was on the court when the game was on the line.“I’ve been kinda disappointed, to be honest, that we haven’t thrown him in there a little bit … kind of bend the plan,” Nurse said before the game. “We’ve got to get him out there and see what happens.
For all that’s gone wrong for the Raptors in the last week, that was the biggest defensive issue to be dealt with. “My concern right in front of me right now is there’s a lot of guys that just aren’t guarding and playing physical enough,” Nurse said. “There’s a lot of stuff happening at the rim and we’re there but we’re not there. You gotta be there and you gotta make a play.
