ARLINGTON — All season, the Rangers are celebrating the 50th anniversary of their first season in Texas, bringing back lots of memorable moments from the past.Like, did they really need to commemorate that?
All of it could be penned to trickle down effects from another poor outing by a young starter, this time it was Otto. It forced the bullpen into the game early, putting extra stress on it. It forced the Rangers to use their best pinch-hitting options, Charlie Culberson and Calhoun, in regulation because they were playing from behind. Pinch-hitting options were limited because of the unavailability of catcher Jonah Heim, who was not on the bench during the game.
The Rangers haven’t won back-to-back games not started by Pérez or Gray since May 17-18 against the Los Angeles Angels. It’s been a minute. The Angels were still being managed by Joe Maddon. On Tuesday, the Rangers gave Otto a 2-0 lead in the first on a homer by Marcus Semien. It was 3-1 heading to the fifth when Otto created trouble for himself by walking No. 8 hitter Tony Kemp to start the inning. It only got worse.
Outside of Otto, the Rangers haven’t felt comfortable calling up any pitching prospect. The guys who should be options have regressed.
