— According to MLB rules, replay decisions are final, and anyone who argues or contests those decisions “shall be ejected.” Woodward knows this, but in his mind, some replays are worth having a conversation with the officials on the field about.Orioles manager Brandon Hyde successfully made two challenges, both of which turned into runs for the Orioles. The second brought Woodward out of the dugout.
Woodward’s issue with the review was that Mateo didn’t swing fully. Mateo checked his swing on the play. “I feel like it sets a bad precedent for our guys or anybody to do it in a big situation,” Woodward said. “Even if you don’t have to take a swing on the ball, you can accidentally hit the glove and you get to go to first base. That rule doesn’t make sense to me if it’s not even an actual swing and you aren’t trying to hit the baseball. If the umpire ruled it wasn’t a swing, why should there be any type of interference that would allow him to go to first base.
