Heim was out of the lineup for the second consecutive game on Saturday against the Twins.
He returned without a rehab assignment on July 13 with one concession: He would only hit left-handed for the foreseeable future. Given the time off and the lack of rehab at-bats, the Rangers expected some timing issues. The bigger concern: Would he be tentative with his swing, perhaps fearful of injuring the wrist or anticipating pain?Bochy said that Heim’s grip and strength have measured out fine in subsequent testing and his bat speed has remained consistent with his season-long range.
“We’ve got to get back to some really good mechanics,” Ecker said. “Whatever psychological barriers are still there, that’s natural. ‘Concern’ is a fair word in the way that we are concerned about everybody. But he’s healthy and we all feel like he’s shown that.” Said Bochy: “We saw Jonah in the first half. He was really letting it go and getting the barrel to the ball. We all go through our skids, but this has been a fairly long one. So sometimes you get to the point of diminishing returns by playing every day on it. It can mentally affect them. That’s why I wanted to give him two days off to just reset.”
