“Obviously, it means we need to fill that role that Odorizzi was going to be in,” Bochy said. “So does that involve one of them? Sure. I think that’s fair to say. We are going to need somebody to help us, particularly early in the season with innings. So, it’s opened things up a little bit for them.Dunning is not your typical relief candidate. Relief brings to mind velocity. Velocity is not Dunning’s strong suit. His strong suit is a sinker, which usually averages about 89 mph.
To be honest, Dunning has spent more time worrying about the pitch clock than his role in 2023. He was spooked by the clock early, rushing into his delivery in his first outing, but has settled down. On Wednesday, he said he felt good about how he “manipulated” the clock. In short, a couple of batters called time out, stepped out and stepped back in with a full 15 seconds on the clock.
When asked about what he could do to win a spot on the roster, though, maybe he gave away that he’s given the possibility at least a passing consideration.
