When Ontario’s schools reopen will they be safe, unsafe, or somewhere in between? That depends on which parts of Ontario’s extensive new school rules one…
On the other hand, actual learning in secondary schools will continue to be compromised by the quadmester system, which obliges students to spend five hours of learning time a day on just two subjects, instead of the normal four. The goal is to keep students physically separated as much as possible, even though 67 per cent of Ontarians between the ages of 12 and 17 have had at least one COVID vaccination and 49 per cent have had two. So, schools aren’t safe, then.
The government wasn’t willing to risk reopening schools back then. The big thing that’s changed is the substantially higher vaccination rates but, somewhat surprisingly, the government school plan doesn’t place too much weight on that. It’s clear that the Ford government is still extremely sensitive about school reopening, even though a mere 139 COVID-19 cases were reported in the province Wednesday. The biggest total was in Toronto, with 26.
Lecce’s plan has been criticized by the Ontario Liberals for not making vaccination mandatory for teachers and other education workers, but at least the government’s stance is consistent. It isn’t making vaccination mandatory for anyone. One would have to question the judgment of any adult working in education who fails to get vaccinated, absent some significant health reason. Demanding that children be vaccinated is really a non-starter.
