Naturally, Ford wants to expand the economy, but the real challenge is finding enough workers to keep it going at its current pace
. The problem is dauntingly large. In Ontario, there are about 378,000 vacant jobs, a number that has increased steadily this year.Article content
The government might have to lower its expectations. The rest of us already have when it comes to just about every good and service. Need a repairman? Better not be in a rush. Want to order a couch? Expect to wait months. Calling a corporation’s “customer service” line? Set aside hours. A doctor’s appointment? Forget it.
The lack of workers in almost every sector will constrain both the economy and the government’s ability to provide services. In setting priorities, housing supply and health care ought to be at the top of Ford’s list. A government that collects $32 billion in sales tax and $5 billion in land transfer tax should be able to come up with some meaningful affordability assistance.
