It’s time to ask what this might mean in an increasingly troubled world.
Only a couple of things about Poilievre mitigate my worst sense of coming trouble. Unlike most radical populists, he’s not vilifying minorities and immigrants. He’s actually courting them. And an element of his housing policy — to incentivize municipal spending on housing with federal funds — seems to make sense.
Painted as a move to liberate people from rules and regulations, it’s essentially a plan to make civil service decisions dance to Tory politics. Of course, there’s time for things to shake out, a couple of years before the next election is absolutely due. Will some of the shallowness, extremism and contradictions of some of Poilievre’s positions become clear in that time — clear enough, at any rate, to deflate his numbers and perhaps moderate his positions?
The answer perhaps lies in how deep the MAGA-type mentality has penetrated in Canada, keeping in mind that large movements in the U.S. inevitably flop over the border. In the rural Prairies, Poilievre’s chateau-fort, it seems to be unshakable, as demonstrated by the recent victory of MAGA-tinted Premier Danielle Smith in Alberta despite a party background of constant scandal, incompetence and general nonsense.
